an awful lot of commentators make reference to swing speed, tempo or rythm in the golf swing, how is it that you can have a big guy like big Ernie who obviously creates an excessive amount of lag with an incredibly measured swing hit the ball as far or further than as say for example Ian Poulter who whilst is a big guy at 6ft 1inch or Camellio who is a shade under 6ft
these two appear to really have to go at the ball to create the club head speed that the big easy seems to create with ease, surely with technology where it is these guys should be able to swing well within themselves to create the same level of shaft lag to hit the ball as far?? no?

Hi David\\

Did you ever play a round of golf with Jack?

Steven wrote on 2010-02-23 06:04:44

I have a general questions about club specs, specifically iron lofts. I realize manufacturers are making lofts stronger so we think we are hitting their clubs longer than another brand. However, right some manufacturers have pitching wedges with a 43* loft. Twenty-five years ago this would have been an 8 iron. At this rate people will be carrying fairway woods, a 7 iron and 6 wedges. I would appreciate your thoughts.

In a recent issue of Golf Digest they suggest the amateur should replace their 3-Wood with a 4-Wood which comes in 17 degree and 18 degree. My question is why replace the 3 with a 4 when a 5-Wood is usually 18 degrees also. Why not for us average players carry Driver, 5 wood and either a 7 or 9 wood?
And you are right, Cobra clubs are right on. I play Cobra driver, I have 3, 5, 7 and 9 woods. Also, I carry a 3, 4 and 5 hybrid although I hit my 5 iron pretty good. Bought hybrids and woods at one time so I would make sure the color of shafts are all the same.
In match play this Sunday, Ian Poulter had what appeared to be a Cobra head cover for his driver that fastned with velcro. I like the new S2 driver and thinking about getting one this spring in the offset style. Being 64 I figure the extra help could not hurt. Do you know where I can get one of those headcovers. Checked online and had no luck. Any help would be appreciated.

I have same question and wondered what you heard?

Cobra Golf wrote on 2010-03-05 10:31:22

Allan,

The headcover that Ian has on his ZL driver is not fastened with Velcro, but with magnets. It is the same headcover that is sold with the ZL at retail so if you are interested in getting one, you can order one through your local authorized Cobra dealer. (Which can be found here: http://www.cobragolf.com/locator.aspx )

As for the woods question, it really comes down to personal preference. There are other factors to consider like how far do you hit a driver off the tee, course length, and the distance gap you get out of each iron. But mostly an amateur should go with the clubs they feel most comfortable with – better to go with what feels good and what you trust than with “a rule”…

Hope that helps.

Hi David,

My golf partner plays year round in the northeast, through snow, rain, and horrid temperatures. He also has every swing aid known to man. He spends tens of thousands of dollars a year on his country club membership, greens fees, clubs, and swing aids, BUT WON’T BUY HIMSELF A FEW LESSONS TO CURE HIS FRAGILE SWING. Any thoughts on how to temp dollars out of his pocket for lessons and few Cobra TWS hybrids that have dramatically helped my game??

I see in your bio that you will be 52 in 2010. Why don’t you get a sponsors exemption on the Champion Tour and get out there and kick those old farts butt. If you are afraid of embarrassments , you and Gary could team up in the Liberty Mutual partnership. If Rush Limbaugh can take the abuse, I know you could.

I always enjoy seeing you on the golf telecast.

Unfortunately, his contract expired at the end of 2009. We are glad he is still under the Acushnet Company umbrella with the Titleist brand, and playing the equipment with which he grew up.

Why doesn’t the US Tour have guys assigned to each group to rake bunkers like in the Open Championship? It would seem to speed play and assure a consistent rake (training assumed)rather than having the caddy do it. Plus it’s a highly sought after volunteer gig. Heck, some guys might even pay to do it!

Note: physical attributes are not the best indicator of what driver you should play. Can these new adjustable drivers be adjusted during the course of playing a round of golf?
Can they be adjusted between holes or even during the playing of a hole?
Marty from Mamaroneck

Cobra Golf wrote on 2009-08-10 11:57:00

Thanks for the question, Martin. The answer is no, the adjustable driver can’t be adjusted during a stipulated round of play. It is against USGA Rule 4-2 a, which states:

4-2. Playing Characteristics Changed and Foreign Material
a. Playing Characteristics Changed

During a stipulated round, the playing characteristics of a club must not be purposely changed by adjustment or by any other means.

Do you think hat anybody at all realizes the potential ramifications of the new governing rules toward the tour irons that make square grooves obsolete? Has this also been ratified by the USGA? If so, when does it go into effect, and how long until all the irons on the planet are illegal?

Cobra Golf wrote on 2009-08-10 11:59:17

Yes, we do think that people know the ramifications of the new groove ruling, and yes, this has been ratified by the USGA. The rule has been put into effect to protect the “Bomb and gouge” aspect of the game. The rule goes into effect for the PGA Tour sanctioned events ONLY, on January 1, 2010. The rule goes into effect for USGA sanctioned events (US AM, US Senior Am, etc.) as of Jan. 1, 2014. The rest of the playing public doesn’t have to worry about it until 2024.

All of the Titleist irons are conforming, and as of right now (no final word yet from the USGA) all Cobra iron grooves are conforming.

I’m curious as to just how much work you typically put into the densley rich commentary and humor. Does it just flow, or do you rework it dozens of times? How hard is it to come up with a suitable topic month after month? Could you tell us a little about how you go about it?

As an aside, while “comedians” like you take a lot of heat when some thin-skined prude is offended by a joke, there are a lot of us out there who respect and easily accept that trying to amuse us will occasionally irritate us. You’ve never managed to offend me (I doubt McCord can say the same), but if you ever do you’ve got a boatload of mullligans as far as I’m concerned.

I know a popular question is: who would be your ideal foursome (you plus 3), but I’d like to stretch that to 3 options…1) picking any 3 active pro golfers (and why), 2) picking any 3 golfers that have gone before (including retirees), and 3) picking any 3 amateur golfers. Hi David,
Do tour players ever have to pay for anything themselves during a Tour event, or do they simply show up and play. I know about courtesy cars at some events (maybe all events?), but what about food, lodging, entertainment, etc. etc. With all the tour vans and reps milling around, do the players also have access to any clubs that they wish to try out, the ones not under a club contract that is. Just curious as to how this plays out week to week, thanks, Chad.

In the question of who is the greatest golfer of all time, the ultimate 18 hole challenge would include, among others, Tiger, Jack, Arnie, Ben, Bobby Jones. But we can not do that. Would Cobra host an 18 hole challenge, with the best golfers today, using equipment equal to what was used in the 1940’s-1950’s, on a course groomed the way courses were in the same era? We know how good these guys are with the equipment of today. I would assume they will be good with the equipment of yesterday, but how does that performance compare to the greats of yeaterday? It would at elast give us a basis for comparison, and I think a large live TV audience.
Thanks for your consideration.

We also get fitted for our clubs to ensure we have the right loft, shaft, and grip. Next, we need to ensure we get the right glove and ball which best suits our game. Finally, we watch video’s, The Golf Channel, and read golf books which offer useful tip.

Now on the first hole, we hit our shot and it doesn’t go straight. What are some of the best tips you can provide amateur golfers which avoid letting your mind get the best of you and remember the good swing thoughts or tips we have been provided?

David – Having attended several PGA events, I noticed that there seems to be a definate pecking order concerning the practice tee. While at the Players Championship in 2007 I watched Tiger arrive at the practice tee and although Bubba Watson was already hitting balls in position number 4, he and his caddie were immediately moved down the line so Tiger could have the spot. It was obvious that the alpha male had arrived. Is this typical? Do the premier players have pre-established practice tee positions? What about the putting green? Give us the scoop from inside the ropes.

Many years ago at a course named Palisades in FL, I hit a shot and my playing partner said I should have been penalized a shot for building a stance. Here’s what happened. I pulled my drive left and the ball came to rest at the bottem of an embankment by a cement rail fence that had out of bounds makers by it. My ball was in bounds but was so close to the fence that I couldn’t get my body between the fence and the ball and make a swing. I didn’t want to hit the ball backwards or take an umpayable lie penalty stroke, but I could and did climb over the fence so I was standing on one of the rails. Leaning over the top rail, I opened the face of 3 wood (I had a 6 ft high bank to get over) and swung parallel to the fence. I managed to advance the ball up over the embankment some 50 yds and I think I salvaged a bogie. None of my playing partners saw what I did, but when I told them, one of them was insistent that I should be penalized a stroke. If you could settle this old dispute, I would be greatful. Was I within the rules or should I find that old score card, make the correction and appologize to my buddy?
Thanks David

If you are in a hazard, do you have to identify your ball, before you deem it “unplayable”? (Outside the red line marking the hazard.) A friend told me that if you can’t identify your ball, you have to take a lost ball penalty, which is different than a 1 stroke hazard penalty. My logic would be a water hazard. You can’t identify your ball there but you still drop a new ball approximately where it last crossed the hazard line.

There’s U.S. Amatuer Open at Southern Hills coming up at the end of August. I’m a golfer and volunteered to be a caddie for an amatuer player. What are the issue to caddie for a player. Is it to keep my mouth shut and let him do the work or if he ask me a question, do I give him my oppinion? I know I may not be like any other players on how to play the game like they have theirs and I have mine.

What are your suggested or what should I do to help the player to win the tournament? My thought was to work together as a team and to trust each other. Just like Tiger Woods and Steve Williams.

Your thoughts would be appreciated.

Who would you pick as your partner in a 2 man scramble – Geoff Ogilvy, JB Holmes or Ian Poulter

What tour stop has the best grub? Everyone has heard about Castle Pines and their milkshakes… but who holds the current crown?

David,

What are a couple of the biggest issues the Nationwide guys face when they get to the Tour? Is it driving, putting, GIR, courses, fans, level of competition. I imagine its a combination of all of those but what are the hardest to overcome?

David – how different is the lifestyle, and how different are the people and their outlooks on life in your native North Ireland as compared to your adopted home of Dallas, TX?

Hi David,

With the number of Tour players wearing the white belt growing each week, I’m curious if you’ve been caught up in this trend yet? I love wearing mine, despite my brother making marching band references each time I do. I think the old, more robust Feherty might have had trouble pulling it off, but the new, svelt Feherty could definitely wear it in style!

So yay or nay on the white belt trend?

Thanks,
CG

Come on David – I have a MUCH larger waist than you and I rock the white belt with the appropriate Loudmouth Golf shorts!!! I guess nobody comments on my white belt since they can’t see it!!! Love ya’ David….

David,
I love your commentary and all of your humor! What tour player most resembles your personality and humor?

Hi David, the Champions Tour is eagerly awaiting your presence. When will you tee it up?

David…….I just moved back from the UK to Dallas and have been in sales and business development all of my life…it’s been a living but I love golf and would like to work in the golf business other than at a retail store….I’ll be turning 50 this year and play at 8.2 right now. What would recommend as a starting point to work in Golf?

Hi David, What is the most memorable round of golf you have witnessed and who played this memorable round?

Rob wrote on 2009-06-11 08:44:54

I’m sure it was when he was playing near Rendalsham airbase and saw his first”Eye in the Sky”. His playing partner was some one he took on as a “project”. After the guy had a nine on a par 3, David told him”I woudn’t want to be like you”.

David,

What is your favorite memory about playing on the PGA tour?

Rickdickulous wrote on 2009-06-02 09:00:21

Hey David,

If golf had never been invented, what do you think you might have pursued in life?

westcoastputters wrote on 2009-08-31 17:38:45

my guess is that David would have been the guest voice on the Simpsons or another late night cartoon that requires his rapier wit.

David-
When playing golf – how important is it to match your belt and shoes?

b ert wrote on 2009-06-11 16:30:23

as important as having your socks match your shorts.
